Golden Clutch

Today we will see an exciting DIY to make a beautiful Clutch using old newspapers. This DIY is really interesting and fun to work on. You just need some old newspapers to get it done. Let’s start the process and see how to make it.

Take some newspapers and tear its pages to start with the procedure. Divide each page into two halves and roll them using some thin tube like object. Prepare around 42 such tubes of newspaper and don’t forget to secure their ends with some glue. We will weave a flat mat with these tubes and be extra careful while doing this step. Now place 24 tubes on a flat surface vertically and they must lie separate from each other. Take a tube and place it horizontally at the top of vertical tubes. Now place this tube such that alternate vertical tubes lie below this horizontal tube while others lie at the top of this horizontal tube.   Just keep on pasting one tube at bottom and next tube on top of the horizontal tube. Follow the image for further understanding. Follow this procedure with 17 more tubes and create a grid like structure. Now make some mixture of water and glue by taking equal amounts of water and glue. Apply this mixture all over the grid. Once done, let the grid rest to dry properly for some time.

Cut out the extra part of tube to get a perfect grid. Color the grid with golden pearl color and color only one side of the grid as other side will be wrapped by some fabric. Once color gets dried, apply some varnish to give smooth and shiny texture to the clutch. Again let it dry for a day at least as varnish takes time to get dry.

We will need two kinds of fabric for the inner part of the clutch- normal dark grey cotton cloth and other is golden shining cloth. First, place the grid on the cotton and trace its boundary. Cut the traced grid from cotton cloth and paste it on the non-colored side of the grid with the hot glue gun. Again place this grid on the golden cloth and trace its boundary leaving some extra space (around 4 cm as we have to fold the fold the boundaries twice) on all the four sides. Now cut the golden cloth with scissor. Fold extra space from all the four sides of the golden cloth and paste it using hot glue gun. Paste this golden cloth on grey cotton cloth on the grid and again fold the boundaries of the four sides of the golden cloth on the grid and paste them using glue gun. Basic frame of the clutch is ready.

Cut two strips of golden cloth of width 9 cm and length 21 cm. Fold the strip across length joining their ends such that it has only one joined side  and rest three are open. Now sew one open side (having other open side opposite) so that it no longer remains open. Then using glue gun, fold some inches from the other open side (opposite to the side which you have sewed) towards outside so that it remains open. Do this step exactly same for another strip. These strips will be the sides of your clutch. Fold the grid from one side towards the opposite side and paste open side whose opposite side has been sewed just like shown in the image. Paste another strip as well on the other side.

Take a pair of magnetic clasp snaps and insert one part of it at the center of the folded grid. Paste another part on the inside of the grid at the top part opposite to the folded side. Now fold the upper part of the grid as well and close the clutch by sticking the button clasp snaps together.

Now we will decorate our clutch using some pearls and stones. Take some golden flowered stones and paste them across the clutch as shown in the image. Take some small golden pearls and make a garland by inserting pearls into a thread through a needle. Seal the ends of the garland and paste this garland across the stones just like shown in the image. You can think of your own design and can customize this clutch for yourself.

This Newspaper Clutch is apt for any party, wedding or get-together. It’s easy to make and decorate at home with just newspapers.
